Picture it. You’re deep in the Scottish Highlands, gazing out into a wall of mist broken only by rocky outcrops and swooping gulls. Then, from the fog appear two people, a man and woman dressed in emerald, holding hands and smiling ear to ear.
This is what the locals would have seen on the chilly morning in April that Mahlory and Theron eloped alone (with me, of course) on the Isle of Skye. Their day was the definition of magical, and I’m so grateful they invited me to capture it.
Enjoy this mix of digital and film (when the rain let up) images from Mahlory and Theron’s Isle of Skye elopement.
I love every destination wedding I’m invited to, but I was especially excited when Mahlory and Theron reached out about planning an elopement on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. This island in the Scottish Highlands is known for its seaside views, sweeping hills, and medieval castles. It also features a looming rock formation, the Old Man of Storr, that rivals even the most sinister haunted castles. And while the hike there can be busy, the usual misty weather provides a sort of cover and creates an intimate, unearthly environment.
For Mahlory and Theron’s elopement, we awoke early on a spring day and hiked to the Old Man of Storr before the other tourists had even left their beds. It was cold, rainy, and windy, but we trudged on for several miles towards the towering stone peaks. Even in the bitter cold, this couple was nothing but smiles. We all gazed in awe at the beautiful scenery, and I caught Mahlory and Theron more than once gazing in awe at once another.
Along the hike, Mahlory and Theron found a small rocky outcrop that was perfect for their ceremony. By the time we reached the perfect ceremony spot, the rain had stopped and we were wrapped in a thick layer of fog. The scenery was something out of a movie: grand and terribly romantic.
After shedding their rain gear, Mahlory and Theron shared their intimate ceremony beneath the Old Man of Storr. They exchange rings, handwritten vows, and smiling kisses, all the while looking like two jewels against the rocky backdrop. No sooner than they pronounced themselves husband and wife did the rain start up again and we took off running down the hills.
On our hike out, the mist and rain made for some stunning images. Because it was so quiet and secluded, Mahlory and Theron really got to be themselves and bask in that just-married feeling. We all shared laughs, but for the most part I hung back, letting them revel in the moment and connect with one another in the landscape.
By the time we made it back down the hill, we were soaked to the bone and freezing cold, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. If you’re looking for an intimate yet grand destination, I can’t recommend eloping on the Isle of Skye enough.
Wherever your wedding, I’d love to share in the magic of the day and capture the beautiful, so-in-love people you are. Visit my contact page, send me a message, and let’s get to work planning your dream wedding.
